Social Emotional Curriculum:
At Slope, we emphasize the importance of building compassionate community members and citizens of the world. In the classroom, we are:
• SAFE: We use safe bodies, keep classroom materials safe, and we make sure everyone has what they need.
• STRONG: We work together and use strong brains by trying new things and being persistent. Our hearts are strong when we share our feelings and practice empathy for our friends.
• FREE: We can express ourselves however we want to! We are the bosses of our own bodies. We share and listen to each other’s boundaries.
Place-based learning means that children are learning from the world around them. This learning requires participation in our community so that children are nurturing their relationship with themselves, their neighbors and their local environment. At Slope, this looks like:
• Two “Nature Days” per week in Prospect Park, where children spend the morning (9-11:30am) freely exploring, building, and creating in nature.
• Garden visits at the 6/15 Green, where children get hands-on experience composting, observing growth and small garden creatures, and digging in the dirt!
Wholesome and organic snack provided by school, both morning and afternoons everyday!
